Marques de Pombal x chain stitch

artisan: Gulnaz Kamalani

This embroidery piece interrogates the stitch’s lingering cultural resonance by documenting the artisan’s embodied experience of her neighborhood. Gulnaz, the artisan, traced her daily movements through Lisbon’s Marquês de Pombal district, translating spaces of interaction into stitched cartography. Her walks materialize as a textile map, with frequently visited areas rendered in lighter green chain stitches forming a tactile archive of presence.

This tapestry serves as a powerful reminder of one's presence in urban space- whether it's acknowledged or not.
